This Is Galleywinter

Galleywinter is an independent Texas Music brand and media company dedicated to telling the stories behind the songs.

Since 1999, we've covered the artists, albums, venues, and communities that make Texas Music, Red Dirt, Americana, and the broader independent scene unlike anything else.

What began as ToreUpFromTheFloorUp.com has grown into something much larger...a home for stories, conversations, live events, books, and a community of fans who believe great music deserves thoughtful coverage.

What We Do

Galleywinter isn't just a website. We publish long-form features, editorials, album retrospectives, and artist interviews. We produce The Co-Write podcast, host the Listening Room songwriter series, organize River Jam each summer, publish original books, and connect fans with the artists and music they love through events and merchandise.

Everything we do is rooted in one belief:  great music deserves great stories. Our guiding ethos has always been "For the fans, by the fans."

Our Story

Galleywinter was founded in 1999 by Jon Paul "Hogleg" Long, with early support from Ryan "Tank" Hargrave.

In 2003, Brad Beheler joined the team and has served as editor ever since, helping guide Galleywinter's growth while remaining committed to independent journalism, authentic storytelling, and the community that surrounds Texas music.

Cody Starr joined the staff in 2016, bringing his own perspective and voice to Galleywinter's editorial coverage.

The Co-Write podcast is hosted by Bobby Duncan and Donovan Dodd, whose conversations with artists have become an important extension of the stories told on the site.

Why We Do It

To preserve, celebrate, and grow the culture of Texas Music.

We're independent by choice. That means we aren't driven by algorithms or chasing headlines. We also don't ever try to put ourselves at the center of the coverage, preferring to shine the light on the people that make it all happen.

We'd rather publish one story that matters than ten that don't. For more than 25 years, our mission has remained the same: to celebrate the people, places, and songs that make Texas Music matter.
